Keep your important digital information backed up daily, either on a CD, thumb drive, or via an online cloud backup service. The cost can be as little as $1 a month.

Start a project and collaborate. Refuse to be in control. Be sure to incorporate ideas from each participant. You’ll strengthen bonds in the process.

Create a list of strategic options. What will you do if the house catches on fire, or someone pulls in front of you on the freeway? What if your bank account is compromised, or you lock your keys in the car? Review your list monthly and update the options you think will no longer work.

Wait until someone finishes speaking before giving your response. Don’t assume you know their intent until you hear everything. Plan to repeat back what they said (even if you don’t actually do it!). Ask a clarifying question that shows you remember what they shared, such as, “Tell me more about . . .”

Adjust your Wi-Fi security settings at café hotspots. Keep your connection set to private so other people can’t see you online.
